Exactly six years ago it occurred to me to celebrate the Solstice by crankstrapping a GoPro to my head and running the full 18 miles of Chicago Lakefront Trail.
A few race directors watched the video, serendipitously, and hired me to replicate the process on their own courses during marathons, which I happily did until the following April, when two bombs were detonated at Boston.
The tragedy turned the marathon industry upside-down, understandably, and my videos went from luxurious marketing materials to potential liabilities — again, understandably.
Less than 48 hours later I didn’t have any clients left and, as it turned out, this is how I found my way into an ad agency — my equivalent of grad school.
It’s strange how you can wake up one morning, do something on a whim, and then it changes the entire trajectory of your life.
Anyway, here’s the result of that first experiment from June 21, 2012.
